Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing (also known as Parnelli or VPJ) was a racing team and constructor from California. Founded by 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner Parnelli Jones, and his business partner Vel Miletich, the team was very successful in Indy car racing, including wins at Indianapolis in 1970 and 1971.
The Formula 1 project was started in late 1972, after designer Maurice Philippe left Lotus and was hired, along with driver Mario Andretti. Philippe had been the principal designer of the Lotus 56 and 72 models, but had left Lotus after a series of disagreements with Colin Chapman.
