Tyrrell 004 was both a chassis and model number of one of the first series of cars built by Tyrrell. This was the final one of the first series built, as an up-to-date spare car in place of 001 and possible replacement for either 002 or 003. But neither Jackie Stewart nor François Cevert cared for driving it. This was the only one of the series not originally constructed with the "shovel" nose, having the full-width semi-sports car nose for its entire racing life.

History[]

004 was built as an updated third car for the team to use in 1972. Stewart drove it at Monaco, and was within sight of eventual winner Beltoise, before a spin and water-soaked electrics caused him to fall back to fourth. He was also scheduled to use it in Belgium, before his attack of gastritis caused him to miss the race. Patrick Depailler drove the car in France, but was not classified. 004 was not used in a race again until Watkins Glen, where Depailler finished 7th.

After the end of the season, the car was sold to South Africa interests. It was entered in the next two South African Grands Prix for Eddie Keizan, without success. He did win a South African F1 championship with the car, however.

as of 2016, the car was owned by a wealthy collector in California, who drives it in historical races.
