Sir Stirling Craufurd Moss, OBE (born 17 September 1929, died April 12 2020) was a British Formula One driver. He is regarded by many as 'the greatest driver not to win the world championship', having come second in the championship in 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958. He was also third in the championship in 1959, 1960 and 1961, before retiring after entering a coma due to an accident in 1962.
Personality[]
Moss was a real gentleman and a good sport. In 1958, at the last race in Portugal he would even point out a rule to the stewards who initially disqualified his rival Mike Hawthorne for having gone against the right direction of the circuit after restarting his car when he had spun and stalled, but Moss argued he hadn't done anything wrong, since Hawthorne jumped back in his car at an escape path, that was not part of the circuit, so his well-earned second place was re-installed after Moss’ kind gesture, which cost him the championship win.
He was also known to be fearless and more daring than his other great rival and alos a legend of the motorsport: Juan Manuel Fangio.
Moss was a ladies’ man. He enjoyed watching the smiles of the beautiful women that were gathered around the Monaco GP course.
Records[]
Stirling Moss has the record of the biggest gap between a winner and a second-place finisher during a Formula One GP race. He was in a class of his own in the 1958 Portuguese GP, finishing 5 minutes and 12 seconds in front of the runner-up.
