The Shadow DN1 was the first Formula One car, but fourth design overall, by Shadow Cars. While the first three cars were CanAm models, built in southern California, the DN1 was mostly designed and constructed in the UK. Minor construction delays prevented the team from actually racing until South Africa, but driver George Follmer recorded sixth and third place finishes in his first two starts, giving the team optimism. Teething problems, a slow straight-line speed and reality made much of the rest of the season a struggle, with the only other points coming from a chaotic Canadian race. After the season Follmer returned to North American racing, and Oliver drove only in the team's CanAm effort, while easing into a supervisory role at Shadow.
