Robert Józef Kubica (born December 7th 1984 in Kraków, Poland) is a Formula One racing driver who competed from 2006 to 2010 for BMW Sauber and Renault and returns for Williams-Mercedes in 2019. Kubica has won one race, the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, becoming the first Polish driver to win a race, and twelve podium positions.
During the off-season in early 2011, Kubica suffered a serious injury as a result of a rally crash which almost cost him his life. While he survived the wreck, he was left with limited use of his right arm. While Kubica had not ruled out a return to F1, the prospect of doing so following such serious injuries seemed doubtful. However, on 6 June 2017, he drove the Lotus E20 at a test run by Renault at Circuit Ricardo Tormo,[1] and went fourth fastest in the Renault R.S.17 at the 2017 Budapest test.[2][3] He then completed a few more tests for Williams, including at the post-season tyre test,[4] and then became the team's reserve driver for 2018.[5] He will be a full-time driver for the Williams team in 2019.[6]
As part of the Polish driver's recuperation, Kubica has competed in a number of minor rallying competitions, including victory in the Ronde Gomitolo Di Lana in Italy.
