Oscar Jack Piastri (born 11 September 2001) is an Australian racing driver, currently competing in the Formula 1 for McLaren and former member of the Alpine Academy. He won the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup, the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship and the 2021 Formula 2 Championship, the latter two at the first attempt.
After spending a year as the Alpine F1 reserve driver, Piastri was set to make his debut at Alpine in 2023, replacing Fernando Alonso who moved to Aston Martin. Hours after Alpine announced their 2023 lineup to include Piastri, he tweeted that he was unaware of any agreement to drive with the team next year, thus dropping a bombshell on Alpine and creating an awkward situation.[1][2]
I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.—Oscar Piastri via Twitter
Formula One Career[]
Piastri joined the Renault Sport Academy in January 2020. After securing the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020, Piastri was rewarded for his efforts by the Renault F1 Team with a young drivers test in Bahrain on 31 October 2020 along with fellow Renault Sport Academy drivers Christian Lundgaard and Guanyu Zhou. In the 2021 season Piastri would find himself a part of the rebranded Alpine Academy alongside Zhou, Lundgaard, Victor Martins and Caio Collet.
On the 16th of November 2021 it was announced that Piastri would be the Reserve Driver for the Alpine F1 Team and the McLaren F1 Team for the 2022 Formula 1 Championship Season.
2023[]
Piastri experienced a tough start to his Formula 1 career, with several qualifying and race results outside the top 10, though he scored his first career points with an 8th place finish at the Australia Grand Prix in his home city of Melbourne. Through a combination of being a rookie and having the same issue of the car not suiting him as much as his teammate like his predecessor Daniel Ricciardo, he has generally not quite matched the pace of teammate Lando Norris. In the British Grand Prix, after upgrades to the McLaren he scored a career high race start with P3 and a race finish of P4. Piastri first podium P3 Japanese Grand Prix and podium P2 Qatar Grand Prix
2024[]
Piastri podium Monaco Grand Prix, Austrian Grand Prix, Belgian Grand Prix, Italian Grand Prix, Singapore Grand Prix and Qatar Grand Prix. First win Hungarian Grand Prix and Azerbajian Grand Prix.
In the standings at the end of the season, he went to be the only driver to complete every racing lap and placed 4th in the driver's championship, that also helped McLaren securing the Constructors championship. A title they haven't had since 1998.
2025[]
Ahead of the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, McLaren announced that they had extended his contract, which will see him race for the Woking-based team until 2028.[3]At pre-season testing, Piastri set the 8th fastest time across the three days.[4]
The season started in his home country, and after an impressive P2 in qualifying it was looking fairly promising for the young australian driver. Unfortunately for Piastri, even though he drove an amazing race for the most of it, on lap 47 he would later in the race find himself at the back of the grid, due to heavy rain that resulted in him going off the track and onto the grass. He fought his car back unto the track even though it was stuck in the wet grass but the incident would result in dropping from a fairly secure P2 place to P13. He still drove the rocketship of a car into P9 and secured him 2 points, but the race would remain a big disappointment for the young australian driver.
At the chinese Grand prix the week later he would find himself in a much better place with a P3 i qualifying for the sprint and finishing P2 in the sprint after gaining a place from the World Champion Max Verstappen and therefore securing 7 points. And with those results he would find himself in P1 after qualifying for the race and therefore earning his first Pole Position and having his teammate Lando Norris in P3. Without much turbulent in the 56 laps, Piastri drove himself to a secure and clear win and therefore securing his 3rd ever win of a grand Prix in his F1 career. The win was a result in which Piastri said: "This is what I feel like I deserved from last week, so [I’m] extremely happy. The team did a mega job, 1-2 obviously. Very, very happy."[5]
He sat out of the first practice session of the Italian Grand Prix because McLaren needed to run a rookie driver in one of their cars.
