Okayama International Circuit is a track in western Honshu, Japan. Opened in 1990, it was originally named TI Circuit Aida. The "TI" is for Tanaka International, the umbrella corporation of wealthy Japanese businessman Hajime Tanaka, who built the circuit.

History

In the 1980s, golf course magnate Hajime Tanaka had an idea. He had become quite wealthy developing golf courses and selling memberships to cover construction and expenses. Tanaka was also a race fan, and wondered if the same business model could be applied to a race track. Wealthy businessmen could buy memberships to the track, and be able to drive their expensive cars on their fancy playground whenever they desired. Use of on-site social facilities would also be available.

He put together a proposal, and started selling memberships. He also sold off a number of his golf courses to raise capital for construction.
