Nikita Dmitryevich Mazepin (born 2 March 1999) is a Russian racing driver who made his debut in 2021 with Haas. He has competed in Formula 3 and Formula 2, taking two race wins in the latter series.
Formula One Career[]
Nikita Mazepin will drive for the Haas F1 Team in his first season of Formula One in 2021, partnering Mick Schumacher. Mazepin was confirmed as a Haas driver on December 2 2020[2], almost two months after British publication Formula1News.co.uk cited a source as saying that Mazepin will "definitely" join the team in 2021[3].
Shortly after the news was announced, Mazepin caused controversy after he posted a video of him groping an Instagram model onto social media, though she later defended his actions and said they are friends.[4] [5]
A petition calling for Haas to fire Mazepin was quickly launched and secured tens of thousands of signatures. [6] Steiner said he is confident he can stay "objective" in their investigation of Mazepin's misconduct[7].
The #WeSayNoToMazepin campaign was unsuccessful as Haas reaffirmed their statement on December 23 2020 [8] just days after the Instagram model groped by Mazepin indirectly referenced the incident on social media. [9]
In the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, he earned the DHL fastest lap time award. Unfortunately, the race never ended and his award was later rescinded.
On March 5, 2022, Mazepin's driver contract was terminated by Haas.[10] The decision by Haas was the result of pressure from the international motorsport community to respond to the ongoing war in Ukraine that was caused by the Russian invasion. Mazepin's father, Dmitry Mazepin, has an estimated 20 percent ownership stake in Uralkali, which has close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
