Michelin (full name: SCA Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin) is a tyre manufacturer based in Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne, France, which was founded in 1888. It is one of the two largest tyre manufacturers in the world, along with Bridgestone.
During practice for the 2005 United States Grand Prix, a failure of a Michelin tire on the banking at Indianapolis Motor Speedway threw Ralf Schumacher's Toyota hard into the wall, causing Schumacher to withdraw from racing that weekend. Because the Michelin representatives could not guarantee the safety of their tires on the banked curve, the 14 Michelin-shod cars withdrew from the race after the formation lap, leaving only six Bridgestone cars to start the race.
