Michael Masi (born 8 June 1978) held the positions of FIA Formula One Race Director, Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and head of the F1 Technical Department since the passing of Charlie Whiting. Like Whiting, Masi was tasked with managing the logistics of each F1 Grand Prix, inspecting cars in parc fermé before a race, enforcing FIA rules, and controlling the lights that start each race.
Masi has previously held the position of deputy race director for the Australian V8 Supercars and the Hong Kong ePrix, and was due to be in charge of the FIA Formula Two and Formula 3 series.
After some controversial decisions at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix sparked an investigation by the FIA, the president Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced in February 2022 that Masi will be replaced by WEC race director Eduardo Freitas and former DTM race director Niels Wittich. They will be supported by former Charlie Whiting right-hand man, Herbie Blash.
On July 12, 2022 it was announced that Masi had left FIA to return to Australia and his family.
