Team Merzario was an Italian Formula One team founded by former Ferrari driver Arturo Merzario. Established in 1977, the team participated in the Formula One World Championship between 1978 and 1979. Team Merzario did not score any championship points during its time in the series.
History[]
After his racing career with established teams like Ferrari, Frank Williams Racing Cars, and March, Arturo Merzario decided to establish his own team. In 1977, he began by entering a March 761B for himself. His best result that season was 14th place at the Belgian Grand Prix, marking the only occasion in three years of participation in Formula One that one of their cars was classified at the finish of a World Championship Grand Prix.
In 1978, Merzario introduced the A1, a car based on the March 761B, featuring a Cosworth DFV engine and Hewland gearbox. The A1 underwent modifications throughout the season, including a change from red to black livery. Despite qualifying for several races, the car failed to finish, with mechanical issues hindering its performance.
The following year, the team developed the A2, a ground-effect car designed by Giorgio Valentini. However, the A2 also faced challenges, including qualifying difficulties and mechanical failures. Additionally, Merzario acquired assets from the Kauhsen team, including chassis and spare parts, to develop the A4. The A4, despite improvements in design, failed to qualify for races, and the team struggled with limited financial resources.
