The Mercedes FO 108W was a V8 2.4L naturally-aspirated engine developed by Mercedes in 2009. The engine was used in the McLaren MP4-24, the Brawn BGP 001 and the Force India VJM02.
The engine deal with Brawn was secured late in the car's development, with the chassis originally being designed to use a Honda prior to the Japanese engine supplier's exit from Formula One. Brawn chose the Mercedes engine over Ferrari because it was easier to integrate into the existing chassis.
The Mercedes FO 108W broke a record for being the first team to win three consecutive races with a single engine. The engine helped Brawn to win the World Constructors' Championship as well as the World Drivers' Championship with Jenson Button.
The engine also performed well in the McLaren and Force India cars, although those teams suffered with other areas in the car's design. However, Lewis Hamilton became the first to win a race in a car using the new Kinetic Energy Recovery System (commonly called KERS) at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix and the first to set pole position in a KERS car at the 2009 European Grand Prix.[1]
KERS was new for the 2009 season. Although Mercedes offered KERS as an option to all of their customer teams, McLaren was the only team to use the system.
