The Mercedes F1 W04 is the Formula One racing car built by Mercedes for the 2013 Formula One Season. Featuring a completely new design team, including former Ferrari engineer Aldo Costa, the team were hoping to build on a relatively disappointing 2012 where Mercedes finished fifth in the Constructors World Championship. This aim was successful in that the team won 3 races with the F1 W04 and finished second in the Constructors' Championship. The team scored points at every race in 2013.
The team's drivers for the 2013 season were 2012 Chinese Grand Prix winner, Nico Rosberg and 2008 World Drivers' Champion, Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg added to his sole race win from 2012 by taking race victories at Monaco and Silverstone, while Hamilton won his first race for Mercedes at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Pre-season[]
The F1 W04 was officially unveiled in Jerez on February 4th 2013, the day before commencement of the opening testing session of the season. Before being unveiled, the car was sent out on a "shakedown" run by Nico Rosberg for the cameras.
After some technical problems at the start of pre-season, the F1 W04 made a good showing in the first two tests, finishing second on day three in Jerez, and topping the timesheets on day 4 in Barcelona.
At the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg won the race. It was 30 years ago since Nico's father, Keke Rosberg, won the same race in 1983.
Rosberg won again for Mercedes at the 2013 British Grand Prix thanks to a gearbox failure on Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull on lap 41.
At the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton secured a maiden win for the team, ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel.
Mercedes finished 2nd in the Constructors' Championship with 360 points, 6 points ahead of Ferrari.
