The McLaren MP4-20 was a car designed by McLaren for the 2005 Formula One season. The car was driven by Kimi Räikkönen and newcomer Juan Pablo Montoya, who joined the team from Williams.

Season

The MP4-20 was the most competitive car of 2005, but the Mercedes engine was unreliable throughout the season, which costed Räikkönen a possible chance of a Drivers' Title to Fernando Alonso and the team of a Constructors' Title to Renault.

In the European Grand Prix, with 2 laps to go, Räikkönen suffered a broken suspension due to high tyre degradation. According to the commentator James Allen, if Räikkönen pitted, he would not get a podium finish. Ultimately, Räikkönen decided not to pit before the final lap, and then his suspension broke coming into Turn 1 of the final lap. He lost the victory to Fernando Alonso.

Räikkönen won seven races, but had a position to win three races in San Marino, Europe and Germany. Montoya won three races, but could have won one more race in Hungary.

McLaren ended up in second in the Constructors' Championship, behind champions Renault.
