Markus Winkelhock is a former Formula One driver who drove in one race for Spyker during the 2007 Formula One Season. He is the son of Manfred Winkelhock, and the nephew of Joachim Winkelhock, both former F1 drivers.
2007 European Grand Prix[]
He is most notable for leading the 2007 European Grand Prix, the only F1 Grand Prix of his career. Driving an underpowered Spyker, Winkelhock qualified at the back of the grid. Rather than taking his place on the grid, Winkelhock opted to pit and gamble on a change to intermediate tyres, predicting an oncoming storm. The race started in dry conditions, but before the end of the first lap, the heavens opened. Winkelhock, on intermediates, found himself in perfect position to climb through the field. At the end of the first lap, all other drivers pitted for inters (except Kimi Räikkönen who missed the pit entry and had to go around again). This allowed Winkelhock to take the lead of the race. Over the next few laps, several drivers crashed out at turn one due to the hazardous conditions, causing the race director to send out the safety car, and then the red flag. Following the suspension of the race, Winkelhock started on pole for the restart (making him the only driver to start both first and last at the same Grand Prix) on full wet tyres, hoping for more showers. Unfortunately this gamble was proved incorrect as the track dried, and Winkelhock dropped down the field, eventually retiring with hydraulic problems on lap 15. He had led on debut for a total of 6 laps.
