Manor Racing Team was a team that competed in the 2016 Formula One season. It took over the Manor Marussia F1 Team after the 2015 season, and the team would have completely new staff. The team folded in January 2017 after their administrator failed to find an acquirer,[1] and then completely withdrew from the 2017 season in early March of the same year.[2]
Background[]
Manor Racing was founded as Manor Motorsport in 1990 by former single-seater champion John Booth. From 2004 to 2009, the team has competed in the Formula 3 Euro Series, having drivers who would eventually race in Formula One such as Lewis Hamilton, Paul di Resta, Kazuki Nakajima and Roberto Merhi.
Prior to Formula One World Championship[]
Before Manor Racing started in Formula One, they started out as Virgin Racing in 2010, before being taken over by Marussia in 2012. After the Marussia team folded in 2014, the team was re-established as the "Manor Marussia F1 Team" in 2015.
Formula One World Championship[]
On 19 January 2016, the team was renamed to "Manor Racing" for the 2016 season. Their chassis is called the MRT05, and they are supplied by Mercedes engines. The team also uses Pirelli tyres.
The team signed 2015 DTM champion Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto, with Alexander Rossi and Jordan King as the team's test drivers.
At the Austrian Grand Prix, Wehrlein scored the team's first point by finishing tenth. This put Manor in tenth place in the Constructors' Championship, but they ultimately lost the position when fellow backmarkers Sauber scored two points in the Brazilian Grand Prix, putting them into eleventh place and losing £30 million in prize money.
Team owner Stephen Fitzpatrick confirmed that the team were in talks of a new investor, but in January 2017, the team confirmed they failed to search for one, and folded.[1] On 1 March 2017, Manor confirmed they were shutting down, therefore not competing in the 2017 season.
