The Lusail International Circuit is a motor racing circuit located just outside in the town of Lusail, north of Doha, Qatar.

Circuit History[]

Opened in 2004 with a construction cost of US$58 million, the circuit is primarily host to the Qatar Grand Prix for MotoGP, including a double-header Doha Grand Prix in 2021. Lighting for the track was added in 2007, with the first night MotoGP race on the track taking place in 2008. The Losail circuit has also hosted races for GP2, World Superbikes (WSBK) and the WTCC.

On September 30, 2021, it was announced that Losail would be host to the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix in Formula One to replace canceled races in the calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The circuit has also signed a 10-year deal to host F1 from 2023 onwards, with a gap in 2022 due to Qatar as the host for the FIFA World Cup.

Circuit Layouts[]

Current[]

The clockwise circuit is on relatively flat land, about two km inland from the Persian Gulf, and just north of the Doha metro area. The track is rather twisty, with no fewer than six corners of at least 120°, and has been described at being reminiscent of Circuito del Jarama, near Madrid.

The circuit has a 1.068 km (0.664 mi) long pit straight, with the pits on driver's right, and the timing line about 13 of the way down. This straight is the only real place for overtaking. The first corner (all of the corners are numbered) is a sweeping 160° right, followed after a very short straight by a similar corner turning 135° left and another short straight leading to Turn 3, a fast 45° right kink. after a straight of about 0.4 km (0.2 mi), turns 4 and 5 are both somewhat tight 90° rights with a very short straight in between, so the net effect is a double-apex 180° corner.
