Born into a wealthy textile family, he drove in the Formula Two for a couple of years, then ran the 1953 German Grand Prix in a privateer Ferrari. Afterwards he decided that formula cars were not for him. He mostly focused on the family business for the rest of his life, but did participate in local touring car races and hillclimbs.
