John Cannon (March 21 1933 - October 18 1999) was a Canadian driver. Born in London, he moved to Canada in 1958 after a stint in the RAF. Active in sports car racing through the 1960s - including a win at he 1968 Laguna Seca Can-am race - he got into Formula 5000 racing in 1969 and won the championship the following year His first entry in Formula One was in a factory March 701 at the non-championship 1971 Questor Grand Prix, where he out-qualified teammate Ronnie Peterson, and finished an impressive 12th. At Watkins Glen later that season, Cannon was entered in the spare factory BRM P160, where he finished 14th, three laps down.
Cannon died in 1999, when the experimental ultralight aircraft that he was flying near his home in New Mexico suffered a structural failure, causing a crash.
