Ian Scheckter is a former driver from South Africa, born on August 22, 1947 in East London. The older brother of Jody Scheckter, Ian drove in parts of four seasons before retiring back to South Africa.
He was due to drive in the season-ending 1977 Japanese Grand Prix, but tried to enter the country on a tourist visa, instead of a work visa. Between that and anti-apartheid feelings in Japan, he was first detained, then deported to South Africa. After returning home, he announced his retirement from F1.
Scheckter continued to race and run a racing school in South Africa for a number of years after leaving F1.
