Gunnar Nilsson (November 20, 1948 - October 20, 1978) was a Swedish Formula One driver who competed between 1976 and 1977 before being struck down by cancer. His best achievement was winning the 1977 Belgian Grand Prix. Nilsson spent his whole career at Lotus.

He died just one month short of his 30th birthday, in what was a horrible year for the Swedes, with Ronnie Peterson, who also drove for Lotus, having died at the Italian Grand Prix a month earlier. That year, his team-mate Mario Andretti won the title.

Legacy

In 1979, a non-championship race, won by Alan Jones, was held in Nilsson's memory, making him the fifth driver to be honoured, following Joe Fry, Paul Greifzu, Stewart Lewis-Evans and Jochen Rindt.

After his death, the Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Foundation was started.
