Guanyu Zhou (周 冠宇 in Chinese; born 30 May 1999 in Shanghai, China) is currently racing for Alfa Romeo, with teammate Valtteri Bottas.
In 2014, he joined the Ferrari Driver Academy. In 2019, he switched to the Renault Sport Academy and served as a development driver for the Renault F1 team until 2020. In 2021, he competed as a Formula Two driver for UNI-Virtuosi Racing and was concurrently a test driver for the Renault-rebranded Alpine F1 Team.
Zhou made his debut with Alfa Romeo in the 2022, making him the first Chinese driver to race in Formula One.[1] Zhou's Formula One debut was not without controversy, as several users on social media called him a "pay driver".[2] He also suffered racist abuse, which was condemned by the users of r/formula1, a subreddit dedicated to Formula One content.[citation needed]
