Goldie Hexagon Racing was a British Formula One team that competed in the FIA Formula One World Championship during the early 1970s. The team was founded and managed by former racing driver Paul Michaels, operating under the banner of Hexagon of Highgate, a London-based car dealership known for selling exotic and performance vehicles.
Formula One History[]
Early Appearances (1972)[]
Goldie Hexagon Racing made its first appearance in Formula One at the non-championship 1972 World Championship Victory Race at Brands Hatch. The team entered a March 721 for John Watson, a rising Northern Irish driver at the time. Although not classified as an official World Championship entry, this marked the beginning of the team’s brief foray into top-level motorsport.
1974 Season[]
The team entered the full 1974 Formula One World Championship using the Brabham BT42 powered by the Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 engine, again with John Watson as their sole driver. Despite strong efforts, the team struggled to score points in the highly competitive field.
Watson's best result came at the 1974 Monaco Grand Prix, where he finished a respectable 7th, narrowly missing out on the points (only the top six scored points at the time). The team participated in a total of nine Grands Prix throughout the season, but mechanical issues, retirements, and the sheer depth of competition kept them from breaking into the top six.
Legacy[]
Although short-lived and ultimately unsuccessful in scoring championship points, Goldie Hexagon Racing holds a unique place in Formula One history as one of the last true privateer teams to compete against major manufacturer-backed outfits. The team's professionalism and association with rising star John Watson helped set the stage for Watson’s later success with teams like Penske and McLaren.
Outside of Formula One, Hexagon of Highgate remains a well-known name in the automotive world, especially among collectors and enthusiasts of classic and performance cars.
