Gianni Marzotto (born 13 April 1928 and died 14 July 2012) was an Italian racing driver who is most well known for his achievements in sports cars. He was also entered into the 1951 Italian Grand Prix by Ferrari, but his car was not ready in time for the weekend.
Marzotto began racing in 1948 with his father's Lancia Aprilia, finishing second in class at the Giro di Sicilia. Shortly after, he met Enzo Ferrari, purchasing a Ferrari 166.
In 1950, Marzotto and his three brothers all entered the Mille Miglia race in Ferrari cars. While practicing for the event in a Ferrari that he had purchased shortly before the race, Marzotto believed his car was under performing and confronted Enzo Ferrari. It was discovered that one of Ferrari's technicians had intentionally lowered the power of the engine to protect Marzotto. The car was corrected, personally overseen by Enzo Ferrari.
In the race, Marzotto started last in the race, but went on to win the event. His race win is sometimes referred to as the double-breasted victory, as Marzotto won the race wearing a brown double-breasted suit.
In 1951, he participated in some Formula Two races with his family's team Scuderia Marzotto. He also participated in some events in a works Ferrari.
In 1953, he again entered the Mille Miglia, planning to race a new Alfa Romeo 6C. However, the car that was originally assigned to Marzotto was given to another driver. Unable to strike a deal with Alfa Romeo, he turned to Ferrari for a car. He was given a used car from the team's storage that had been raced by Luigi Villoresi, but suffered a brake failure near the end of its final race. Marzotto had the car restored, but the work was not completed until a few hours before the race.
During the race, he was forced to make a U-turn to return to one of the service points in the event to have his oil changed. His mechanics were unable to open the bonnet of the car and were forced to cut a hole directly over the oil filler cap. He went on to win the event for the second time, despite suffering two minor crashes during the race. This was Marzotto's final international race.
