France, officially the French Republic, is a sovereign country in Western Europe that includes overseas regions and territories. It is a highly successful nation in Formula One, having won four drivers' championships (all by Alain Prost). French constructors Matra and Renault have also won Constructors titles. Despite this, no French driver has won a Grand Prix since 1996 when Olivier Panis won the Monaco Grand Prix. The French Grand Prix was also held at a number of circuits since motor racing began. The last was held at Magny Cours in 2008, and it will return at Circuit Paul Ricard in 2018.

Three Frenchmen are currently in Formula One: Pierre Gasly, Romain Grosjean and Esteban Ocon.
