Footwork Arrows were a Formula One team that competed in between 1991 and 1996. Japanese businessman Wataru Ohashi invested in the team that were known as Arrows in 1990 before it changed to Footwork in 1991.
History[]
Origins and Rebranding (1990–1991)[]
The Arrows F1 team, founded in 1977 by Franco Ambrosio, Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass, and Tony Southgate, entered a new era in 1990 when Japanese businessman Wataru Ohashi—owner of Footwork Express Co., Ltd.—became the team’s title sponsor. By 1991, Ohashi took majority control, and the team was rebranded Footwork Arrows.
For the 1991 season, Footwork struck a deal to use Porsche V12 engines, which proved disastrous due to their size, weight, and lack of competitiveness. The team reverted to using Ford-Cosworth engines mid-season.
Transition and Growth (1992–1993)[]
In 1992, the team improved with Mugen-Honda V10 engines and a more refined chassis. Drivers Michele Alboreto and Aguri Suzuki delivered modest performances, and the team scored points more consistently than in the Porsche era.
The 1993 season saw further development, with Derek Warwick and Aguri Suzuki driving. Footwork continued to operate under that name, though Jackie Oliver had regained control behind the scenes.
Return to Arrows Identity (1994)[]
In 1994, the Footwork branding was dropped, and the team returned to its original name, Arrows Grand Prix International, marking the end of the Footwork era in Formula One.
Legacy[]
While Footwork never won a race or scored a podium in its short tenure, it represents a key chapter in the evolution of the Arrows team. It bridged the gap between the early privateer spirit of Arrows and the later, more corporate Arrows of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Footwork’s partnership with Japanese backers was also one of the earliest examples of significant Japanese investment in a European F1 team—paving the way for future ventures involving Japanese companies and talent.
