EuroBrun Racing[]

EuroBrun Racing was a Formula One constructor that competed between 1988 and 1990. The team was a joint venture between Italian racing car manufacturer Euroracing and Swiss racing outfit Brun Motorsport. Despite their ambitious plans, EuroBrun struggled with limited funding and competitiveness, failing to score a single championship point during their three seasons in Formula One.

History[]

Formation[]

The team was created in late 1987 when Walter Brun, owner of Brun Motorsport, partnered with Euroracing, an Italian engineering and racing company that had previously managed the factory Alfa Romeo Formula One team between 1982 and 1985. The partnership combined Brun’s financial backing and racing experience in sports car competition with Euroracing’s technical facilities.

EuroBrun entered Formula One for the 1988 season, aiming to establish itself as a long-term competitor.

1988 season[]

EuroBrun’s first car, the ER188, was designed by Mario Tolentino and powered by the normally aspirated Cosworth DFZ V8 engine. The team fielded two cars for Italian driver Stefano Modena, who was making his Formula One debut, and experienced Swiss driver Oscar Larrauri.

Modena impressed at times, qualifying for most races and finishing 11th in his debut at Brazil, while Larrauri struggled to match his teammate’s pace. The team’s best result came with Modena’s 11th place finishes, but the car was generally uncompetitive. By the end of the season, EuroBrun was considered one of the slowest teams on the grid.

1989 season[]

For 1989, EuroBrun reduced to a single entry due to financial issues. The new car, the ER189, was late in development and performed poorly. The team retained Oscar Larrauri briefly before replacing him with Swiss driver Gregory Foitek, followed by German rookie Claudio Langes in testing roles. However, the ER189 was consistently too slow to pre-qualify, and the team failed to make the grid for the entire season.

By the end of 1989, Euroracing had withdrawn from the partnership, leaving Walter Brun as the sole owner.

1990 season[]

Brun persisted into 1990 with the updated ER189B chassis and two drivers: Brazilian Roberto Moreno and Italian rookie Claudio Langes. Moreno produced some remarkable performances in an uncompetitive car, most notably qualifying for the United States and Hungarian Grands Prix. He finished 13th at Phoenix and later achieved the team’s best result with a 13th place finish at Hungary, a race where he managed to keep the car running reliably.

Langes, by contrast, failed to pre-qualify at all during the season, becoming the driver with the most Grand Prix entries without a single race start.

Despite Moreno’s efforts, financial difficulties and lack of sponsorship forced EuroBrun to close at the end of the 1990 season.
