Ernst Loof (born 4 July 1907 and died 3 March 1956) was a German engineer, racing driver and co-founder of Veritas. He participated in the 1953 German Grand Prix using a privately entered Veritas, but his fuel pump failed after only two meters of racing. Some sources record Loof as having the undesirable record of the shortest F1 career, while others continue to attribute that record to Marco Apicella.
Prior to World War II, Loof was a successful motorcycle racer. After the war, he co-founded Veritas with Georg Meier and Lorenz Dietrich. The company built Formula Two and sports cars, some of which participated in Formula One races.
When the company went bankrupt, its assets were purchased by BMW. BMW hired Loof as to engineer the body of their cars. He worked for the company until he died from a brain tumour in 1956.
