Ernie de Vos (born 1 July 1941 and died 5 March 2005) was a Dutch-born Canadian racing driver. He was entered to race in the 1963 United States Grand Prix, but never participated in the event.
He was killed in a cycling accident on March 5, 2005.
Formula One Career[]
After his family immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands when he was young, de Vos advanced through karts up to Canadian Formula Junior. While racing there, he was asked to participate in the 1963 United States Grand Prix with the Canadian Formula Junior team, Canadian Stebro Racing. He would have driven alongside John Cannon, although Cannon would leave the team before the race.
The team was owned by a Canadian automotive accessory manufacturer that ran cars designed and built in their Montreal facility in the Canadian Formula Junior series. The company had received permission from event organizers at Watkins Glen International to race two Formula Junior cars in the 1963 F1 event.
The plan was to enter two Stebro Mark IV cars in the race. However, manufacturing delays meant that the company was only able to produce one of the cars. Further complicating things, the team's engine supplier, Martin, failed to deliver engines to the team in time for the race. The team was forced to build a Ford engine for the car.
Stebro arrived at the circuit with only one car. The engine had nearly half the horsepower of the competitor's cars and the Stebro was not competitive. Neither de Vos or the team's reserve driver, Ludwig Heimrath Sr, drove the car. This left team owner Peter Broeker to drive the car.
De Vos did not participate in Formula One again.
After Formula One[]
Upon leaving motor racing, de Vos acquired a BMW dealership in Canada, thanks in part to his connection with BMW as they had sponsored him in his racing career.
De Vos was an avid cyclist. In 2000, he cycled from Orangeville, Ontario to Halifax, Nova Scotia over the summer. In 2001, he cycled across Australia.
In 2003, he married his wife Jane.
De Vos was killed in a cycling accident on March 5, 2005, in Florida, United States.
