The People's Republic of China is a country in eastern Asia, It is the world's third or fourth largest country by size, and the largest by population, with more than 1.4 billion residents. One person in every five on Earth is a resident of China. It is bordered by North Korea, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.
The Chinese Grand Prix has been held at Shanghai International Circuit every year since 2004, except from 2020 to 2022 as these races were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which the city of Wuhan was the epicenter of the pandemic. China had never had a Formula One driver in a race until Guanyu Zhou, nor has it ever fielded a team. Some Chinese racers however, have tested F1 machinery. Qinghua Ma participated in free practice weekends for HRT and Caterham in 2012 and 2013 respectively, while Renault Junior and F2 racer Guanyu Zhou took part in testing in 2020.
Zhou made his debut in the 2022 Formula One Season, making him the first ever Chinese to drive in Formula One full-time.
