The Canadian Grand Prix is a Formula One World Championship event that has been contested every year since 1967, except for 1975, 1987 and 2009. The race started off alternating between a track in the English-speaking part of Canada (Mosport Park near Toronto) and the French-speaking portion (Circuit Mont-Tremblant, north of Montreal). But after hosting two races, Mont-Tremblant ran into financial problems, and the race spent several years at Mosport. In 1978, a new circuit opened on one of the islands in the Ste. Lawrence River at Montreal, used for hosting the 1967 World's Fair (Expo 67). That circuit was initially called Circuit Ille de Notre Dame, but later named Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Except for two years when the race was not held, it has remained at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ever since.
