This engine is that of the BMW 328 produced in 1937 and which won the Thousand Miles in 1940 and its category at the 24 hours of Le Mans 1939. The English company Bristol acquired this engine as war damage in 1946.

He equipped a lot of F1s from 1952 to 1957, but mainly Cooper. In 1952 Mr. Hawthorn finished 4th in the world championship behind the 3 Ferraris with his Cooper-Bristol, a 3rd place and two 4th places.[1]
