Motor Racing Developments Ltd. , more commonly known as Brabham , was a British racing car manufacturer who competed in Formula One . Founded in 1960 by F1 World Champion Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac , the team joined F1 in 1962 , winning both championships twice within five years, and taking two more drivers' titles in the 1980s before folding mid-way through 1992 .
History [ ]
Jack Brabham founded the team alongside Ron Tauranac . The pair had met in 1951. Brabham, the more successful driver, found his way in F1 and won the World Championship in 1959 and 1960 with the Cooper team.
Brabham and Tauranac set up Motor Racing Developments Ltd. (MRD) in 1960, not using each other's name. Tauranac produced their first car, a Formula Junior car in 1961 in secrecy as Brabham was still employed by Cooper. MRD was soon renamed after the car was unveiled and held the "Brabham" name, with the cars having a type number starting with "BT", which stood for "Brabham Tauranac". After a poor 1961 , Brabham left Cooper to start driving for the Brabham Racing Organisation, with car built by MRD.
