Formula 1 Wiki

Bob Gerard Racing was a British racing team founded by Frederick Roberts "Bob" Gerard, a respected privateer driver and businessman from Leicester. Active primarily in the 1950s, the team was known for its participation in Formula 1 and Formula 3 events, as well as its involvement in the 500cc Formula 3 category.

Origins and Early Years[]

Bob Gerard began his racing career in 1933 using a Riley, and after World War II, he purchased an ERA R4A from Reg Parnell. He modified the car for circuit racing, achieving notable success in events such as the British Empire Trophy and the Jersey Road Race. Gerard's ERA R14B was particularly successful, securing victories in the British Empire Trophy and the Jersey Road Race between 1947 and 1949, and podium finishes in the British Grand Prix in 1948 and 1949.

Formula 1 Participation[]

Gerard competed in eight World Championship Formula 1 Grands Prix from 1950 to 1957. Notably, he achieved three sixth-place finishes in these events, despite competing with aging machinery . His best result in a World Championship race was a sixth-place finish in the 1950 British Grand Prix and the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix.

Formula 3 and 500cc Racing[]

In addition to his Formula 1 endeavors, Gerard was active in Formula 3 and 500cc racing. He won the Junior Race at Brands Hatch in 1951 and the International Trophy at Goodwood in 1952. Gerard also secured victories at Charterhall in 1953 and Snetterton in 1953, with consistent top-three finishes throughout the early 1950s.

Legacy[]

Bob Gerard's contributions to motorsport were recognized with the naming of "Gerard's Bend" at Mallory Park Racing Circuit in Leicestershire, a testament to his impact on British racing . He continued to race into the 1960s and operated Bob Gerard Cars Ltd., established in 1974 in partnership with Roy Moore, which continued to operate into the early 1980s.

Bob Gerard Racing remains a notable example of a privateer team that achieved success through dedication and resourcefulness in the competitive world of motorsport.
