Benetton Formula Ltd., commonly referred to simply as Benetton, was a Formula One constructor that participated from 1986 to 2001. The team was owned by the Benetton family who run a worldwide chain of clothing stores of the same name. In 2000 the team was purchased by Renault, but competed as Benetton for the 2001 season. In 2002 the team became Renault F1.
Origins and Formation[]
The Benetton Group entered Formula One as a sponsor in 1983, initially backing the Tyrrell team and later supporting Alfa Romeo in 1984. In 1985, the Benetton family acquired the Toleman team, which had been operating in Formula One since 1981. Following the acquisition, the team was rebranded as Benetton Formula Ltd in early 1986 . The team retained many of Toleman's key personnel, including designer Rory Byrne and technical director Pat Symonds, who would play pivotal roles in the team's future successes.
Early Years and Development[]
In its inaugural season, Benetton Formula Ltd introduced the B186, a car designed by Rory Byrne. The team made significant strides in the following years, with the B188 achieving its best championship position to date in 1988 . Championship Success[]
The team's most successful period came in the mid-1990s. In 1994, Michael Schumacher secured his first Drivers' Championship with Benetton, and the team also won the Constructors' Championship. Schumacher repeated his success in 1995, winning his second Drivers' Championship, while the team finished as runners-up in the Constructors' standings. Transition to Renault[]
In 2000, the Renault-Nissan Alliance purchased Benetton Formula Ltd for $120 million, signaling the beginning of a new era for the team. The team continued to compete under the Benetton name for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. In 2002, the team was rebranded as Renault F1 Team, marking the end of the Benetton era in Formula One.
