Bellasi was a Swiss-Italian motorsport company that briefly entered Formula 1 as a constructor in 1970 and 1971. Founded in 1966 by Guglielmo Bellasi, the company specialized in manufacturing composite parts for racing cars and produced cars for Italian Formula 3 in the late 1960s.
Formula 1 Involvement[]
In 1970, Swiss driver Silvio Moser commissioned Bellasi to design a Grand Prix car for him. The resulting car, the Bellasi F1 70, featured a simple riveted aluminium monocoque with a tubular sub-frame carrying the radiator and front suspension. It was powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine and used Goodyear tyres.
The Bellasi F1 70 made its debut at the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix but failed to qualify. Subsequent attempts at the French, British, and German Grands Prix also resulted in non-qualification. The car finally made it onto the grid at the 1970 Austrian Grand Prix but retired after 13 laps due to a radiator failure. It was entered again at the 1971 Italian Grand Prix, where it qualified but retired after only five laps.
Team Ownership and Legacy[]
While Bellasi designed and constructed the F1 car, the ownership and entry into races were managed by Moser's team, known as the Silvio Moser Racing Team. In 1971, the car was sold to Tom Wheatcroft and later became part of the Donington Grand Prix Collection. Moser used the proceeds to purchase two Brabham Cosworth BT42s, which he later sold to touring car driver Martino Finotto.
Today, Bellasi continues to operate as a company specializing in the design and construction of models, molds, and parts in composite materials, serving various sectors including motorsport, automotive, and industrial applications.
