Bahrain, officially the Kingdom of Bahrain is an island nation on the Persian Gulf, as a small archipelago made up of 51 natural islands and an additional 33 artificial islands, centered around the main island which makes up around 83 percent of the country's landmass.
Bahrain is the site of the ancient Dilmun civilization. It has been famed since antiquity for its pearl fisheries, which were considered the best in the world into the 19th century. Following a period of Arab Rule, Bahrain was ruled by the Portuguese Empire, Persian Empire and as a protectorate from the United Kingdom until it gained independence in 1971.
Bahrain has been the host of the Bahrain Grand Prix since 2004, held on the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir every year, except in 2011, when the race was canceled due to political protests in the country. The circuit has used three different layouts overall, with the long endurance layout used in 2010, and the outer layout used as a back-to-back race weekend as the Sakhir Grand Prix in 2020. National carrier airline Gulf Air has been sponsoring the Bahrain Grand Prix since its inauguration.
