Azerbaijan, officially the Republic of Azerbaijan is a country in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, the Russian republic of Dagestan to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia and Turkey to the west, and Iran to the south.

Azerbaijan first proclaimed independence from the Russian Empire in 1918, before being incorporated into the Soviet Union as the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. The modern Republic of Azerbaijan proclaimed its independence on 30 August 1991, shortly before the dissolution of the USSR in the same year.

Azerbaijan first hosted a Formula One Grand Prix race as a street circuit in the capital of Baku in 2016. The inaugural race was initially known as the European Grand Prix, before the name Azerbaijan Grand Prix was used since 2017. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has been on the calendar annually, except in 2020 when the race was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
