André Guelfi (born 6 May 1919 in Mazagan (now El Jadida, El Jadida Province, Casablanca-Settat), Morocco – 28 June 2016 in Saint-Barthélemy, France) was a Moroccan-born French former racing driver and businessman. Guelfi competed in one Formula One World Championship race, the 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix, in a Formula Two car, finishing five laps down on winner Stirling Moss in fifteenth. He also competed in a pair of non-championship races in 1954 and 1957. Following the death of Robert La Caze, who also raced at the 1958 Moroccan GP, Guelfi became the oldest living F1 driver.
Private Life[]
Outside of F1, Guelfi was previously a debt collector, a fisherman, a soldier and a realtor, among other professions. He received a suspended three-year jail sentence and a €1 million fine for causing a scandal involving politicians while working for Elf, and even partook in money laundering. He married the niece of French president George Pompidou, was friends with former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, and was a long-term liaison with Russia that was influential with the awarding of the 1980 Olympic Games. He has retired to Malta and has written a book about his life called L'original (full French title: L'original: D'un village marocain aux secrets de l'affaire Elf, le parcours d'un aventurier de la vie, English: The original: From a Moroccan village to the secrets of the Elf case, the course of an adventurous life).
With the passing of Guelfi, the mantle of oldest living F1 driver goes to Englishman Kenneth McAlpine.
