Alexandre "Alex" Dias Ribeiro (born in Belo Horizonte, November 7, 1948) is a former racing driver from Brazil. He raced in 20 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix.
Later, he became the FIA's official Medical Car driver.
Formula One Career
Pre-Formula One
1976
Ribeiro made a one-off debut appearance for Hesketh at the 1976 United States Grand Prix, where he finished in 12th place, two laps down.
1977
After a solid graduation from the lower formulae (he placed fifth in the 1976 European Formula Two season), Ribeiro paid for his drive in the March Formula One team for the 1977 season. Ribeiro drove a March for a full season in 1977, but he suffered a horrible start to the year, retiring from his first four races and failing to qualify for his next six. His first finish came in the form of an eighth place in the German Grand Prix. He greatly improved on his performance, and ended the year with finishes in four of the five last races.
1979
Ribeiro failed to qualify for the last two races of the year for Fittipaldi.
Post-Formula One
In 1994, he joined the Brazil national football team as a pastor at the FIFA World Cup in the United States.
In 1999, Ribeiro became Formula One's medical car driver. On Saturday morning before practice for the 2000 Monaco Grand Prix, Ribeiro crashed the medical car into the barriers at Tabac. He was unhurt but FIA medical delegate Sid Watkins suffered broken ribs in this incident.
At the 2002 Brazilian Grand Prix, Ribeiro had another incident in which he was lucky to escape with his life, after he opened the car door and Nick Heidfeld smashed into it as he was about to get out of the car.
