The 24 Hours of Le Mans (French: 24 Heures du Mans) is the world's oldest active endurance sports car race, held since 1923 at the Circuit de la Sarthe near Le Mans in France. Considered to be once of the most prestigious events on the racing calendar, the "Grand Prix of Endurance" forms a third of the legendary Triple Crown of Motorsport, with the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix sharing that honour.
In terms of the race itself, drivers compete in teams of three over the twenty-four hours in specifically-designed "Le Mans Prototypes" and in GT cars, on a circuit made of permanent race track and public streets. The most recent race, held on the 16-17 June 2018 as part of the FIA World Endurance Championship, was won by Toyota, with Fernando Alonso, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima sharing the car.[1]
Due to its prestige, Formula One drivers have occasionally take part in the event, with Fernando Alonso the most notable of recent times having won the 2018 race. Previously, Jacky Ickx had won the race six times, a record that stood until broken by Tom Kristensen in 2005, while Derek Bell and Emanuele Pirro both have five wins. Olivier Gendebien, Henri Pescarolo and Yannick Dalmas were other prolific competitors at Le Sarthe, taking four wins apiece.
As for constructors Toyota are the only major manufacturer in the top LMP1 class, after Porsche, the most successful manufacturer at Le Mans with seventeen wins, and Audi quit to focus on Formula E. After Audi (fourteen), Ferrari have nine wins (though none since 1965) and Jaguar have seven.
The Circuit de la Sarthe hosted some pre-Championship French Grand Prix races, and the smaller Bugatti Circuit hosted the 1967 French Grand Prix. Furthermore, the first Grand Prix race, the 1906 French Grand Prix, was hosted in Le Mans but not at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
