The 2025 Singapore Grand Prix, officially known as the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2025, was the eighteenth race of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship, held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, from 3rd to 5th of October 2025.

Background[]

The 2025 Singapore Grand Prix, officially titled the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2025, was scheduled for 3–5 October 2025 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore. As the eighteenth round of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship (out of 24), it formed a critical part of the season’s run‑in toward both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles.

Entering the Singapore round, the drivers’ title fight was tightly contested, primarily among the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, with Max Verstappen still in mathematical contention. McLaren’s consistency and double‑scoring finishes throughout the season had built them a strong buffer in the standings.

At that stage, Piastri held a 22‑point lead over his teammate Norris, making the intra‑team rivalry especially significant. Verstappen’s position, while third, was increasingly difficult to leverage unless errors or misfortune struck the McLaren driver. In effect, the drivers’ championship was still open but skewed in McLaren’s favour, and internal team dynamics (especially between Piastri and Norris) would play a pivotal role in its final outcome.

Practice Overview[]

FP1[]

Early running saw several teams experiment with tyre compounds and cooling strategies to adapt to the circuit’s unfamiliar grip levels, and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin set the early benchmark lap times.

Mid‑session, Alex Albon’s Williams returned to the pits trailing smoke from its rear brakes, prompting his team to deploy fire extinguishers and cooling fans to bring temperatures under control. The incident severely curtailed his running and prevented him from posting a representative lap time. Meanwhile, the rest of the field navigated the evolving circuit, managing lock‑ups, tyre swaps, traffic, and incremental setup adjustments as the grip developed.

By the end of the 60‑minute session, Alonso emerged fastest, setting a 1:31.116 on soft tyres. He was followed by Charles Leclerc in second, 0.150s adrift, and Max Verstappen in third, 0.276s behind the leader. Lewis Hamilton claimed the fourth fastest time, while championship leader Oscar Piastri registered fifth, narrowly trailing Hamilton. Lando Norris completed the top six.

FP2[]

Early into the session, George Russell lost control of his Mercedes at Turn 16 and struck the barriers, damaging his front wing and front-left tyre. The incident triggered the first red flag, and Russell was unable to continue further in the session. Later, Liam Lawson brought out a second stoppage when his Racing Bulls car clipped the outside wall at Turn 17, suffering front-right damage and forcing another halt to running.

When track action resumed, more drama unfolded in the pit lane. Ferrari released Charles Leclerc into the path of a McLaren driven by Lando Norris, resulting in contact. Norris’ front wing was damaged and he was pushed back into the garage for repairs. The incident prompted an investigation by the stewards for an unsafe release. Meanwhile, other drivers encountered moments of instability—Lewis Hamilton experienced a significant twitch and touched the wall, and both Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto had near misses but avoided major incidents.

Despite the chaos, teams pushed to extract performance in the closing minutes. Oscar Piastri claimed top honours, setting a leading time of 1:30.714. He edged out Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar by just 0.132 seconds, while Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso slotted into the top four. Lando Norris managed to salvage P5 despite his pit lane damage, and Lance Stroll secured P6. Other noteworthy performers included Esteban Ocon in seventh, Carlos Sainz in eighth, Charles Leclerc ninth, and Lewis Hamilton rounding out the top ten.

FP3[]

The hour opened with relatively uneventful running: many teams initially used medium tyres to collect baseline data as the circuit’s grip continued to evolve. Lando Norris was early to set the benchmark, posting a 1:31.021 on medium tyres, which held as the fastest time during the opening phase.

Roughly 15 minutes into the session, proceedings were interrupted by a red flag after Liam Lawson lost control of his Racing Bulls car and impacted the wall approaching Turn 8. The stoppage caused teams to briefly pause their programmes until the car was recovered and debris cleared. When action resumed, drivers began transitioning to low‑fuel runs and qualifying simulations, fitting soft tyres and seeking pace.

In the closing stages, the times tumbled. Charles Leclerc initially displaced the top time, before Lando Norris lowered the mark again on softs. Ultimately, Max Verstappen claimed top honours with a best lap of 1:30.148, edging out Oscar Piastri by just 0.017 seconds. George Russell was third, 0.049 s off Verstappen’s pace, followed by Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris, both within 0.089 s of the benchmark.

Qualifying[]

Q1[]

Max Verstappen set the early benchmark with a lap of 1:30.317, edging ahead of Oliver Bearman and George Russell in the opening runs. Lewis Hamilton experienced a moment when he ran wide into the dust at Turn 1, forcing him to abort his attempt and return to the pits before continuing.

As the session progressed, the track continued to evolve, and times began to tumble. Isack Hadjar climbed to the top of the timing sheets with a 1:30.214, before Lando Norris and then Hamilton pushed further to improve. Oscar Piastri aborted one of his efforts after encountering a car on the run‑off area and expressed irritation over unclear marshals’ flagging. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli was impeded early in the session by Carlos Sainz at Turn 3, affecting his first flying lap.

In the closing minutes, Hamilton struck back with a 1:29.765 to claim provisional top spot. Russell also improved to slot into second behind him, relegating Norris, Verstappen, Antonelli, and Hadjar below him at that moment. However, just prior to the chequered flag, Pierre Gasly stopped on track with a hydraulic issue at Turn 11, bringing yellow flags that disrupted the final laps of many drivers.

The five drivers eliminated in Q1 were Gabriel Bortoleto, Lance Stroll, Franco Colapinto, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, with Bortoleto’s 1:30.820 being the slowest among them.

Q2[]

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen set the opening benchmark with a time of 1:29.747, soon shadowed by Oscar Piastri who got within 0.076 s using used softs. As the session progressed, several drivers had laps deleted for exceeding track limits, including Kimi Antonelli and others, shaking up provisional order. In response, Antonelli surged temporarily to first, only for George Russell to edge ahead with a 1:29.562 on a late run, splitting the Mercedes driver and Verstappen by just one-hundredth.

Behind the front group, competition for the remaining Q3 slots intensified. Lando Norris and Piastri slotted into fourth and fifth respectively, while Charles Leclerc clawed back from earlier in the session—despite a wall clip at Turn 14—to improve into sixth ahead of Hamilton and Hadjar. Fernando Alonso and Oliver Bearman managed to secure the final two qualifying places, while Nico Hülkenberg, Alexander Albon, Carlos Sainz, Liam Lawson, and Yuki Tsunoda were eliminated at the end of Q2.

Q3[]

George Russell immediately laid down a marker, posting a lap of 1:29.165 on his opening run, despite brushing the wall at Turn 17 in the process. That time proved strong, but Russell did not rest on it. On his second attempt, he shaved another seven thousandths to record 1:29.158, cementing his grip on pole before any rival could mount a serious challenge.

Max Verstappen emerged as Russell’s closest challenger. However, his bid for pole was thwarted by a combination of traffic and timing — Verstappen ended up 0.182 seconds adrift and was unable to better his lap in the final push. Oscar Piastri continued to deliver for McLaren, securing third on the grid with a lap of 1:29.524, though he was off the pace set by Russell. Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressed with fourth, while Lando Norris took fifth. The two Ferraris—Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc—locked out sixth and seventh respectively.

Isack Hadjar, Oliver Bearman, and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten, securing the final spots for the race start.

Report[]

Prior to the race start, significant grid changes were enforced: both Williams cars were disqualified from qualifying after their rear wings failed DRS slot gap checks, relegating them to the back. Alexander Albon additionally started from the pit lane after his team made suspension adjustments under parc fermé. Pierre Gasly also began from the pit lane following floor and suspension changes. Some damp patches from earlier rain in the day added uncertainty to the track surface, though by the start the circuit was largely dry.

At the lights out, Russell held a clean launch from pole into Turn 1 and retained the lead into the first corner. Behind him, the battle for position intensified: Lando Norris made contact with the rear of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull in turn, and in the melee also collided with his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri as he attempted an aggressive move. Norris emerged ahead of Piastri, but the contact set the tone for internal tension at McLaren. Piastri proceeded to scold the move over the radio, thought McLaren decided nothing was wrong. Verstappen dropped slightly as a result of the contact but maintained second place behind Russell.

Russell paced the race from the front, managing his tyres and maintaining a comfortable margin as the race progressed. Verstappen, running second, was under pressure from Norris, who endeavoured to close the gap in the later laps.

The first pit stops began with Verstappen switching to hard tyres relatively early (Lap 18) in an attempt to undercut rivals. Leclerc followed shortly after, also opting for hard tyres, though he rejoined behind several midfield runners before climbing back through. At McLaren, a slow pit stop for Piastri (5.2 s) dropped him down to fourth, losing momentum in what could have been a podium challenge. Norris pitted a lap earlier at McLaren’s prompting to protect track position from Leclerc and maintain pressure on Verstappen. Russell made his sole stop in tandem with Kimi Antonelli for Mercedes (double stack), temporarily surrendering the lead before reclaiming it as rivals completed their tyre changes. Hamilton, under pressure from Verstappen, also pitted for the hard compound but suffered a slow front‑right stop that hampered his race and cost him time.

On lap 45, Nico Hulkenberg locked the rears and spun, but didn't retire as there are no substantial damage to the car. As the laps wound down, Russell held a commanding margin, controlling the pace and ensuring his advantage remained unthreatened. Verstappen defended stoutly against Norris, fending off several overtaking attempts in the final stint to maintain second place. Norris, though unable to overtake, secured a hard‑fought third. Piastri crossed the line in fourth, ahead of Mercedes rookie Antonelli who executed a strong recovery drive to fifth.

In the midfield, Charles Leclerc took sixth, followed by Fernando Alonso, who was promoted to seventh after Lewis Hamilton’s post‑race penalty. Hamilton had initially finished seventh but was assessed a five‑second penalty for exceeding track limits, demoting him to eighth. Ollie Bearman delivered a solid drive to ninth for Haas, while Carlos Sainz, recovering from his uphill start, claimed the final point in tenth.
