Max Verstappen dominated the 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, reclaiming the lead from Lando Norris early on and controlling the race to take his third win of the season. McLaren secured second and third with Norris and Oscar Piastri after a late pit stop shuffle and team orders restored Norris ahead. Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, followed by George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, while Alex Albon, Gabriel Bortoleto, Kimi Antonelli, and Isack Hadjar completed the points. The race saw retirements for Fernando Alonso with suspension failure and Nico Hülkenberg, who failed to start due to hydraulics issues. [1]

Practice Overview[]
The opening day of the 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Autodromo Nazionale Monza delivered a mix of home-team dominance, championship tension, and rookie drama across both Friday practice sessions.
In Free Practice 1 (FP1), Ferrari thrilled the tifosi with a commanding 1–2 finish. Lewis Hamilton, in his first Monza outing as a Ferrari driver, set the fastest time of 1:20.117, narrowly ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, who trailed by just 0.169 seconds. Carlos Sainz, driving for Williams, posted the third-fastest lap, continuing his strong form. Max Verstappen placed fourth, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli impressed early with fifth, despite a brief off-track moment. McLaren opted to rest Oscar Piastri for FP1, giving rookie Alex Dunne a chance behind the wheel. Lando Norris finished sixth, struggling with balance issues, and George Russell reported power concerns late in the session.
Free Practice 2 (FP2) saw McLaren bounce back, with Lando Norris topping the timesheets at 1:19.878. Charles Leclerc remained competitive in second, just 0.083 seconds adrift, while Carlos Sainz again secured third. Oscar Piastri returned to action and finished fourth, ahead of Hamilton in fifth. Verstappen continued to report instability in his Red Bull setup, ending the session sixth. The session was briefly halted after Antonelli spun at Lesmo 2 and beached his Mercedes, triggering a red flag. Several drivers, including Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto, were investigated for yellow flag infringements. Gravel excursions and floor damage were common, with multiple teams conducting precautionary checks.
Ferrari’s tribute livery honoring Niki Lauda’s 1975 championship added emotional weight to their strong showing, while McLaren’s late-session pace hinted at a fierce qualifying battle ahead. With sunny skies forecast for the weekend, the stage is set for a high-speed showdown at the Temple of Speed.

Qualifying[]
Q1 – Russell fastest on alternate tyre strategy[]
The opening phase of qualifying began under clear skies and in front of a capacity Monza crowd. While most drivers opted for the soft compound, Mercedes sent George Russell and Kimi Antonelli out on mediums. Early laps from Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton brought cheers from the Tifosi, but McLaren soon took over with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri going first and second. Russell then surprised on mediums with a 1:19.414 to top the times. The closing minutes were frantic, with just over four‑tenths covering the field from first to the Q2 cut‑off. Isack Hadjar’s mistake at Lesmo 2 proved costly, dropping him out alongside Lance Stroll, Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, and Liam Lawson. Russell led the session from Max Verstappen, Norris, Yuki Tsunoda, and Carlos Sainz.
Q2 – Verstappen moves to P1 as Norris survives scare[]
After a short delay to clear gravel, drama struck early when Norris locked up heavily into Turn 1 and had to abort his first lap, leaving him in the drop zone. Verstappen set the pace with a 1:19.140, ahead of Russell and Piastri, while Gabriel Bortoleto impressed in fourth. Norris rejoined the action and delivered a late lap to climb to fifth, securing a Q3 berth. Eliminated were Ollie Bearman, Nico Hülkenberg, Sainz, Alex Albon, and Esteban Ocon. Joining the frontrunners in the pole shootout were Leclerc, Bortoleto, Fernando Alonso, Hamilton, and Tsunoda.
Q3 – Verstappen delivers lap record for pole[]
The final segment brought classic Monza drama. Piastri initially went quickest, then Leclerc took over before Verstappen claimed provisional pole. Norris, still shaking off earlier troubles, produced a superb 1:18.869 to snatch P1 — but Verstappen immediately struck back with a lap record 1:18.792 to reclaim pole by 0.077s. Piastri settled for third, followed by Leclerc and Hamilton, though the latter will drop down the grid with a penalty. Russell, Antonelli, Bortoleto, Alonso, and Tsunoda completed the top ten.

Report[]
Max Verstappen claimed his third win of the 2025 Formula 1 season with a commanding drive at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, converting pole position into victory despite early drama. At the start, Verstappen and Lando Norris went wheel‑to‑wheel, with the Red Bull driver skipping the first chicane to keep the lead before handing the position back on Lap 2 to avoid a penalty. Within a few laps, Verstappen retook P1 and steadily built a gap, managing his pace and strategy to stay clear of the McLarens.[1]
McLaren’s race was complicated by a slow pit stop for Norris, which allowed Oscar Piastri to jump into second. The team then ordered Piastri to swap back positions, citing fairness and past precedent, leaving Norris second and Piastri third at the flag. Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, who recovered from a grid penalty to take sixth.[1]
Alex Albon delivered valuable points for Williams in seventh, followed by Gabriel Bortoleto, Kimi Antonelli (penalised for erratic driving), and Isack Hadjar, who impressively rose from a pit lane start to 10th. The race saw retirements for Fernando Alonso due to suspension failure and Nico Hülkenberg, who didn’t start because of hydraulics issues. Verstappen described the win as “super enjoyable,” praising the team’s execution and tyre strategy, as F1 now heads to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.[1]
