The 2024 Qatar Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2024) will be the twenty-third and penultimate race of the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship, held at Lusail International Circuit on the weekend of November 29 to December 1.

Background[]

This weekend Qatar will host the sixth and final Sprint race of the 2024 season.

Sprint[]

The structure of the sprint weekends was changed for 2024, with the goal of rationalizing sprint events and separating them from the rest of the Grand Prix weekend.[1][2]

The sprint format will continue to run at six Grands Prix during this season.[3] It will take place at the Chinese, Miami, Austrian, United States, São Paulo, and the Qatar Grands Prix.[4]

The rules for DRS usage in Grands Prix were adjusted slightly. Drivers will now be allowed to use DRS one lap after a race start, safety car restart, or red flag restart, one lap earlier than in previous seasons. This was tested during the sprints of 2023.[5]

Sprint Weekend Format[]

The weekend begins with a single practice session on Friday, allowing teams to fine-tune their cars and gather crucial data. Following this, Sprint Qualifying (previously known as “Sprint Shootout”) takes place, setting the starting grid order for the Sprint race. This session is critical as it determines the positions for the first competitive event of the weekend.

On Saturday, the action kicks off with the Sprint race, which is a shorter, high-intensity race that not only provides additional excitement for fans but also offers up to 8 points that contribute to the championship standings. The main qualifying session on Saturday afternoon determines the starting grid for the Grand Prix. This session is divided into three parts: Q1, Q2, and Q3, with each phase progressively eliminating the slowest drivers until the final grid positions are decided.

Finally, the Grand Prix itself takes place on Sunday, where drivers compete in the main race of the weekend. This race is the culmination of all the preparation and strategy, and it is where the most championship points are awarded.

This revised format aims to enhance the overall excitement and competitiveness of the race weekend, providing fans with more action and teams with additional strategic challenges.[6]
