The 2024 Formula One Season, formally known as the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship, is the 75th season of the FIA Formula One World Championship, the premier single-seater racing series sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile.
It began on March 2 in Bahrain and will end on December 8 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Teams and Drivers
Entry List
Free practice drivers
In at least two sessions of Grand Prix weekends, one for each car entered in the championship, each team was required to field a driver who had not taken part in more than two Grands Prix. The following drivers were entered at selected events to drive in free practice:[22]
Team changes
Alfa Romeo ended their partnership with Sauber and left Formula One in 2023 as Sauber prepares to become the Audi works team in 2026.[23][24] With Alfa Romeo out, Sauber was took on new title sponsors, Stake.com and Kick. For 2024, they will compete with team name Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, and competing with the constructor name Kick Sauber.
AlphaTauri rebranded as RB and relocated the aerodynamics operations of the team to Milton Keynes in the United Kingdom amidst a management restructure.[16][25][26]
Aston Martin is set to enter under a modified name, as Cognizant will no longer be a title sponsor.[5]
Driver changes
The only change from the drivers contracted at the beginning of 2023 occurred at the former AlphaTauri team, who replaced Nyck de Vries with Daniel Ricciardo from the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix onwards. All driver and team combinations that competed in the final round of the previous season remained unchanged for the start of the next season for the first time in Formula One World Championship history.[27]
Mid-season Changes
Driver changes
Carlos Sainz Jr. was forced to withdraw from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after he was diagnosed with appendicitis. He was replaced by Ferrari reserve and Formula 2 driver Oliver Bearman, who made his Formula One debut. Sainz returned at the following Australian Grand Prix.
From the Italian Grand Prix onwards, Formula 2 driver Franco Colapinto replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams. Colapinto made his Formula One debut.

Regulation changes
Technical regulations
In response to extreme weather conditions resulting in cockpit overheating during the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, teams will now be allowed to install a scoop to the car that is intended to cool down the driver and cockpit area.[37][38]
Wheel covers aiming to reduce spray in wet weather conditions will be further tested during the season.[39]
Teams will not be allowed to start wind tunnel or computational fluid dynamics work for the 2026 season, which will see major technical regulations rule changes, until 1 January 2025. However, teams may still do other preliminary research and development work not covered by these restrictions.[40][41]
Tyres
The "alternative tyre allocation" trialled at the 2023 Hungarian and Italian Grands Prix, where drivers were given 11 sets of tyres in an attempt to cut costs in the sport, will be discontinued. Therefore, teams will revert to having 13 sets of tyres available per driver during every race weekend.[42]
The C0 tyre compound (the hardest compound in Pirelli's dry tyre range), which was introduced but not used during the 2023 season, was dropped from the tyre line-up.[43] This compound was previously known as the C1, but was renamed at the start of the 2023 season following the introduction of a new C1 compound that slotted between the old C1 and current C2 compounds in terms of hardness.[44][43]
A proposed trial for a ban on tyre blankets for this season and a full ban in 2025 was abandoned.[45]
Sporting Regulation
The decision appeal process was amended for the 2024 season. The deadline to submit a right of review request was reduced from fourteen to four days after an event. In an attempt to stop potentially frivolous appeal attempts, the FIA will also introduce a fee for the process.[46]
Sprint events
The structure of the sprint weekends was changed for 2024, with the goal of rationalizing sprint events and separating them from the rest of the Grand Prix weekend.[47][48]
The sprint format will continue to run at six Grands Prix during this season.[49] It will take place at the Chinese, Miami, Austrian, United States, São Paulo, and the Qatar Grands Prix.[31]
The rules for DRS usage in Grands Prix were adjusted slightly. Drivers will now be allowed to use DRS one lap after a race start, safety car restart, or red flag restart, one lap earlier than in previous seasons. This was tested during the sprints of 2023.[50]
Sprint Weekend Format
The weekend begins with a single practice session on Friday, allowing teams to fine-tune their cars and gather crucial data. Following this, Sprint Qualifying (previously known as “Sprint Shootout”) takes place, setting the starting grid order for the Sprint race. This session is critical as it determines the positions for the first competitive event of the weekend.
On Saturday, the action kicks off with the Sprint race, which is a shorter, high-intensity race that not only provides additional excitement for fans but also offers up to 8 points that contribute to the championship standings. The main qualifying session on Saturday afternoon determines the starting grid for the Grand Prix. This session is divided into three parts: Q1, Q2, and Q3, with each phase progressively eliminating the slowest drivers until the final grid positions are decided.
Finally, the Grand Prix itself takes place on Sunday, where drivers compete in the main race of the weekend. This race is the culmination of all the preparation and strategy, and it is where the most championship points are awarded.
This revised format aims to enhance the overall excitement and competitiveness of the race weekend, providing fans with more action and teams with additional strategic challenges.[51]
Power Unit Allocation Changes
The power unit allocation per season was increased from three to four per driver for the 2024 and 2025 championships.[52]
