Background[]
Race Ban[]
Kevin Magnussen has been banned from the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix due to accumulating 12 penalty points on his FIA Super Licence over a 12-month period.[2] This ban was triggered after his collision with Pierre Gasly during the 2024 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.[3] The incident resulted in Magnussen receiving a 10-second time penalty and two additional penalty points, pushing him over the limit.
This is the first time a driver has reached the 12-point threshold since the rule was introduced in 2014. The last time a driver received a race ban was in 2012 when Romain Grosjean was racing for Lotus where he caused a multi-car crash at the start of the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix.[3]
Magnussen expressed frustration with the penalties, arguing that the contact with Gasly was minor and did not warrant such a severe consequence.[2][3]
