As the 19th round of the adrenaline-pumping 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship season gears up, all eyes are on the Circuit of the Americas, the illustrious host of the 2023 United States Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Lenovo United States Grand Prix 2023), held on the weekend of October 20 to October 22 2023.

In a thrilling flashback to last year, Verstappen and MercedesLewis Hamilton had spectators on the edge of their seats with a nail-biting race for victory. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari collided with George Russell in a dramatic opening lap.

Following the chequered flag, Max Verstappen secured his 15th win of the season and the 50th of his Formula One career, drawing level with his own season win record. Lewis Hamilton put up a fierce battle but finished 2.2 seconds behind, only to be disqualified after the race for a technical breach.

Hamilton attempted a one-stop strategy but returned to a two-stop due to tire issues. Daniel Ricciardo and Charles Leclerc also went for a one-stop strategy, which drastically compromised their race. Verstappen faced brake problems but managed to pass Lando Norris for the lead on lap 28. He also overtook Charles Leclerc, who was disqualified for the same infringement as Hamilton.

Background[]

Last time around, Max Verstappen clinched his third title in a thrilling showdown in Qatar, with the championship unfolding during an electrifying Sprint race. Fans can expect another heart-stopping race as the F1 Sprint format makes its fifth and penultimate appearance this year.

Ricciardo’s Triumphant Return[]

After a five-race hiatus due to a hand injury, Daniel Ricciardo is set to make a roaring comeback at AlphaTauri. The Australian racer suffered a metacarpal fracture during practice for the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, sidelining him for subsequent rounds. Liam Lawson stepped in for Ricciardo but ended his tenure at Red Bull’s sister squad after last weekend’s 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. Now, with Ricciardo fit and raring to go, the 34-year-old is set to dazzle at the final rounds as he gears up for a full season on the grid next year.

Drivers Face Heat Challenge[]

The 2023 Qatar Grand Prix left many drivers fatigued due to high temperatures and a fast-paced race around a circuit with high-speed corners. While no such extremities are expected this weekend, drivers will still face challenges from the heat, with air temperatures expected to soar over 30 °C (86 °F).

Haas’ New Direction[]

Haas has been in “survival” mode for the last handful of races, according to Kevin Magnussen. However, this weekend marks a new direction for the team. The VF-23 will be fitted with a substantial update that hopes to offer a speed boost as the battle for seventh in the Constructors’ Championship heats up. With its upgrades at COTA, Haas embarks on a new direction, much to the excitement of the team and fans alike.

Sprint events[]

The sprint format had ran at six Grands Prix starting this season, compared to three in 2021 and 2022.[1] It had took place at the Azerbaijan, Austrian, Belgian, Qatar, United States and São Paulo Grands Prix.[2]

To accommodate the sprint events, a fresh weekend format was introduced, departing from the one used in 2021 and 2022. The revamped schedule kicks off with a single practice session on Friday, followed by the all-important qualifying session to determine the starting grid for Sunday's Grand Prix. On Saturday, a thrilling new qualifying session, Sprint Shootout, replaces the former second practice session. This session is solely responsible for establishing the grid positions for the Sprint.

The Grand Prix itself still takes place on Sunday, but the build-up and anticipation were heightened by the intense Sprint Shootout on Saturday.

In contrast to the traditional qualifying, the Sprint Shootout qualifying features shorter durations for each phase. Q1 lasts for 12 minutes, Q2 for 10 minutes, and Q3 for a nail-biting 8 minutes. Additionally, a fresh set of tires was mandatory for each phase of the Sprint Shootout. Teams must use medium tires for Q1 and Q2, while the high-performance soft tires are reserved for Q3, adding a strategic twist to the proceedings.[3]

Ahead of the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, the FIA modified the rules for tire usage during the Sprint Shootout. Race Director, Niels Wittich, announced the revised rule for Article 30.5 h) iv), to:

“In the period SQ3 of the sprint shootout, up to one set of dry-weather tyres may be used, and this must only be a set of the soft specification.”

Ultimately, this allowed teams to use a used set of tires in Sprint Shootout.[4]

Weekend format[]

The event was the fifth in the season to feature a new format specifically adopted for those Grands Prix which include the additional sprint race. The format will consist of a single practice session on Friday, followed by the qualifying session which will determine the grid for the Sunday's Grand Prix. On Saturday, a new qualifying session called "sprint shootout", in place of the old second practice session, will be run, determining the grid for the sprint. The Grand Prix is taken place on Sunday. The new sprint shootout qualifying is run shorter than the traditional qualifying: Q1 will be 12 minutes, Q2 10 minutes and Q3 8 minutes. In addition, new tyres are mandatory for each phase, with mediums for Q1 and Q2, and softs for Q3.[5]

Sprint Shootout[]

Sprint Shootout Report[]

Max Verstappen made a strong comeback on Saturday, emerging as the victor in an exciting Sprint Shootout at the United States Grand Prix. The Dutch driver narrowly outperformed his competitors, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen secured pole position for the Sprint event with a blistering lap time of 1m 34.538s during his single run in SQ3. This redemption came after his earlier pole position lap time was invalidated in Friday's qualifying. He managed to outshine Leclerc by a mere 0.055 seconds.

Hamilton, one of the final drivers to complete his lap, settled for third place, just 0.069 seconds adrift of Verstappen's time. He will share the second row with his fellow countryman, Lando Norris, who secured fourth place. Behind Norris, his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, rounded out the top five.

Carlos Sainz claimed the sixth position for Ferrari, followed by Sergio Pérez in the Red Bull and George Russell in the Mercedes. It's worth noting that Perez and Russell achieved their times on used soft tires. Alex Albon of Williams secured ninth place, with Pierre Gasly of Alpine closing out the top 10.

Daniel Ricciardo narrowly missed entering SQ3, which would have given AlphaTauri their second P11 start of the weekend. He will start ahead of Fernando Alonso in 12th, marking an improved performance for the Aston Martin driver following his exit in Q1 on Friday.

Esteban Ocon will commence the Sprint from the 13th position for Alpine. Meanwhile, a significant lock-up at Turn 12 caused Lance Stroll to be unable to complete his lap, leaving him in 14th place in the other Aston Martin. He will be positioned ahead of Guanyu Zhou in 15th, as the Alfa Romeo driver outperformed Valtteri Bottas for the second time during the weekend.

Both Haas drivers failed to advance from SQ1. Nico Hülkenberg will start the Sprint in 16th place, alongside Kevin Magnussen in 17th. They will be followed by Bottas, Yuki Tsunoda in the AlphaTauri, and Logan Sargeant in the Williams, who secured the 20th spot on the grid.

SQ1[]

In SQ1, Max Verstappen led the way in the initial 12 minutes of the Sprint Shootout at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, outpacing Charles Leclerc by over three-tenths of a second. In the final moments, Leclerc closed the gap to just 0.002 seconds behind Verstappen. Alex Albon claimed the third position, followed by Carlos Sainz, Jr., George Russell, Sergio Pérez, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris.

SQ2[]

In SQ2, Max Verstappen led the way with a time of 1m 35.181s, despite spinning at Turn 9. He was ahead of Leclerc, Sainz, Norris, and Pérez to round out the top-five. Daniel Ricciardo narrowly missed SQ3 in 11th place, and Alonso, Ocon, Stroll, and Zhou were also eliminated.

SQ3[]

In SQ3, Max Verstappen secured pole position with a lap time of 1m 34.538s, narrowly edging out Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Several drivers, including Russell, faced post-session investigations for not adhering to the race director's instructions.

Due to a limited supply of soft tires, the track remained quiet for the first part of SQ3. However, as the session progressed, drivers emerged one by one to set their final laps. Verstappen initially appeared vulnerable as his rivals posted fast sector times, but his time held up.

Leclerc claimed second place, with Hamilton and Norris closely trailing. The top four drivers were separated by just 0.101s. McLaren's Oscar Piastri impressed by finishing fifth, followed by Carlos Sainz. Sergio Pérez secured the seventh spot, with Russell in eighth, both setting their times on used soft tires. Alex Albon showcased his skill by taking ninth for Williams, ahead of Pierre Gasly in the Alpine.

Race[]

Race Report[]

Max Verstappen secured his 50th Formula 1 race win after starting sixth on the grid. He held off Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris in a tense race. Norris had taken the lead on the opening lap from pole-sitter Charles Leclerc but couldn't maintain it. Hamilton, on new tires, attempted to catch Verstappen but settled for second. Norris finished third, fending off Carlos Sainz.

Sergio Perez passed Leclerc late in the race to secure fifth place. Other notable results included George Russell in seventh and Lance Stroll's ninth-place finish after a pit lane start. Yuki Tsunoda claimed the fastest lap for AlphaTauri. Alex Albon had a penalty but finished 11th, and three drivers, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri, and Esteban Ocon, retired from the race due to car issues.

Hamilton and Leclerc disqualified[]

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified due to irregularities discovered during car inspections, specifically relating to rear skid pads not complying with Formula One Technical Regulations. Both teams argued that the wear on the skid pads was due to track conditions and a tight race schedule but were unsuccessful in their appeal. As a result, Lando Norris moved up to second place, Carlos Sainz secured a podium finish, and Sergio Pérez extended his lead over Hamilton in the drivers' championship battle.

Several other drivers also benefited from this disqualification, including George Russell, Pierre Gasly, and Lance Stroll, while Yuki Tsunoda earned the fastest lap. Williams had both cars score points, with Alex Albon in ninth and Logan Sargeant earning his first F1 point in tenth place.
