The 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, officially known as the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023, marked the inaugural race of the Las Vegas Grand Prix in addition to being the twenty-second race of the 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship. This historic event represented the 1,100th Grand Prix in the rich history of Formula 1. The excitement unfolded at the Las Vegas Strip Circuit during the weekend of November 16 to November 18 2023.

Background[]

The Las Vegas Grand Prix, set to be held on a Saturday, is a rare occurrence in Formula 1, with the last non-Sunday race being the South African Grand Prix in 1985.

This unique circuit spans 6.201 km (3.853 mi), making it the second-longest on the 2023 Formula One calendar, surpassed only by the 4.34-mile Belgian Grand Prix track and the 3.83-mile track of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Notably, the Las Vegas Boulevard section of the circuit boasts the second-longest straightaway in Formula One, stretching for an impressive 1.18 mi (1.899 km). The longest straight among the 2023 circuits can be found at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, measuring 1.36 mi (2.189 km).

During the race, drivers will reach peak speeds of 212 mph (341.2 km/h) as they navigate this extensive straight. The expected average speed for the 50-lap race is estimated to be 147 mph (236.6 km/h), with an average lap time forecasted at 1 minute and 33 seconds. This combination of factors promises an exciting and challenging race for both drivers and fans alike.

Cold Desert Nights[]

Formula 1 teams are expressing their apprehension regarding the challenges posed by the expected low temperatures during the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend in November. The qualifying session on Friday is scheduled to commence at midnight (8am UTC), while the race on Saturday will kick off at 10pm, local time in Nevada (6am UTC). The race may even extend beyond midnight if there are any red flag delays and subsequent restarts.[1]

Historical data suggests that in mid-November, the ambient temperature is likely to drop below 10 °C (50 °F), possibly reaching as low as 5 °C (41 °F). These temperature conditions will undeniably emphasize the importance of optimizing tire performance, particularly during qualifying laps, race starts, and after safety car restarts.
