Qualifying[]
On July 8, 2023, qualifying took place at 15:00 local time (UTC+1).
Qualifying Report[]
Q1[]
Qualifying occurred under cloudy skies, with a brief patch of rain affecting the closing moments of Q1 (the first segment of qualifying). During his first qualifying lap, Lewis Hamilton experienced a spin at Stowe corner, causing him to slide into the gravel and prompting a short yellow flag period. Fortunately, he managed to recover and rejoin the track. After the spin, Hamilton faced the risk of being eliminated in Q1 but improved his time significantly. Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon both had their lap times deleted due to track limits violations. The session was red-flagged with three minutes remaining in Q1 to recover Kevin Magnussen's Haas, which had broken down between Stowe and Vale corners. Albon was in the elimination zone as his lap times were deleted again, while Logan Sargeant ventured onto the grass. After the restart, Albon secured a Q2 spot by setting a time that placed him seventh. Meanwhile, Nyck de Vries was released onto the path of Oscar Piastri, but no investigation was conducted. Later, when resuming qualifying after the red flag, Verstappen understeered and hit the pit wall, causing damage to his front wing, which had to be replaced.
Once the session resumed, Pérez set the initial fastest time, but other drivers improved with faster laps, resulting in Pérez's elimination in Q1. This extended his streak of poor qualifying performances, failing to make Q3 (the third segment) for five consecutive races, while his teammate Verstappen secured pole positions in those races. Bottas experienced a breakdown at the end of Q1, and despite setting a time for Q2, he couldn't participate further in qualifying. Pérez, Tsunoda, Zhou, and De Vries were also eliminated, with Norris topping the session ahead of Leclerc, Russell, Hamilton, and Verstappen.
Q2[]
The start of the second session (Q2) was delayed for the recovery of Bottas's car, and the rain subsided. During the session, Stroll and Sargeant had their laps deleted for track limits violations. Norris briefly led the session before Fernando Alonso, Albon, Leclerc, and Sainz set faster times. Pierre Gasly, Piastri, Hamilton, and Norris all posted quick laps, with Verstappen securing the fastest time by the end of the session, ahead of Piastri, Norris, Albon, and Sainz. Bottas, Stroll, Ocon, Nico Hülkenberg, and Sargeant were all eliminated from the session.
Q3[]
With no threat of rain in the last ten minutes of Q3, DRS (Drag Reduction System) was enabled. Verstappen initially secured pole position after the first laps, with Hamilton and Piastri following closely. However, all drivers pitted for fresh tires. During their second Q3 laps, Verstappen held onto his pole position, while Norris and Piastri secured second and third place, respectively, making it McLaren's highest qualifying result of the season. Norris and Piastri were pleasantly surprised by their respective performances during the session, with Piastri remarking that it was a "massive step in the right direction" for the team.
Post Qualifying[]
Following post-qualification scrutineering, Bottas was disqualified due to an insufficient fuel sample. However, the stewards allowed him to start the race at their discretion, although he was sent to last place.

Race[]
Report[]
During the race, Lando Norris made an impressive start, gaining an advantage over polesitter Max Verstappen and leading the race for four laps. However, Verstappen, assisted by DRS (Drag Reduction System), reclaimed the lead on lap four and held onto it until the chequered flag. He also secured the fastest lap of the race.
As the first lap unfolded, there were several tussles among cars at the rear of the field. Lewis Hamilton managed to pass Pierre Gasly and began to chase Fernando Alonso, but found himself held up behind him. Eventually, Hamilton made a successful overtaking move using DRS. Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon were also engaged in a battle for position until Ocon's race ended on lap 12 due to a hydraulics leak, while Alexander Albon was running in tenth place.
Although rain was reported during the race, it did not intensify enough to warrant the usage of wet weather tires. Instead, drivers started changing to different types of dry tires. Yuki Tsunoda was the first to switch to soft tires, followed by Charles Leclerc opting for hard tires. Meanwhile, Verstappen continued to extend his lead, and Norris, focusing on the drivers behind him, felt content with his pace. Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri, reacting to Sergio Pérez's pit stop, also changed his tires and rejoined the race ahead of Leclerc and George Russell.
On lap 32, Kevin Magnussen's Haas suffered a power unit fire, leading to his retirement from the race. The virtual safety car was initially deployed, but it was later upgraded to a full safety car, allowing the field to change their tires during the safety car period. In the pit lane, Hamilton managed to leapfrog Piastri and Russell, emerging in third place. However, the Ferrari drivers, Carlos Sainz Jr. and Leclerc, lost positions during their pit stops. Meanwhile, Zhou Guanyu reported brake issues.
Upon the safety car restart, Verstappen retained his lead while intense battles unfolded behind him. Hamilton attempted to overtake Norris but was unsuccessful. Albon and Leclerc also engaged in a close battle during the final laps. Stroll made contact with Gasly's rear-right suspension, resulting in Gasly's retirement. Stroll received a five-second penalty for the incident. Sergio Pérez showcased a remarkable recovery from qualifying in fifteenth position to finish in sixth place.
Verstappen's victory marked his first British Grand Prix win and his second triumph at Silverstone, following his previous victory at the 2020 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Norris secured second place, marking his and McLaren's first podium since the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and his joint best Formula One result, equalling his second-place finish at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. The podium finishes of Hamilton and Norris made history, as it was the first time since the 1999 British Grand Prix that two home drivers representing the United Kingdom stood on the same podium in the race, reminiscent of David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine's achievements. Norris also became the first British driver, other than Hamilton, to achieve a podium finish on home soil since Coulthard's victory at the 2000 British Grand Prix.
