The 2022 Singapore Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2022) was the 17th race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship, held at Marina Bay Street Circuit on the weekend of September 30 to October 2 2022.

Background[]

The event was held across the weekend of the 30 September – 2 October. It was the seventeenth round of the 2022 Formula One World Championship and the first time the event had been held since 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 races cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] Sebastian Vettel entered as the defending race winner.[2]

For this race and the following Japanese Grand Prix, McLaren will run a special black and pink livery celebrating their partnership with cryptocurrency company OKX.[3]

Championship standings before the race[]

Max Verstappen entered the race leading the Drivers' Championship by 116 points from second-place Charles Leclerc, and third-place teammate Sergio Pérez, by 125. Red Bull led the Constructors' Championship, from Ferrari by 139 points and Mercedes by 164 points.[4]

Verstappen could secure his second World Drivers' Championship in a row. He needed to outscore Leclerc by 22 points, Pérez by 13 and George Russell by six. Verstappen could secure the title if he won the Grand Prix with the bonus point for fastest lap, with Leclerc outside the top seven and Pérez outside the top three. If Verstappen had won the race, without securing the fastest lap, he could've secured the title if Leclerc finished outside the top eight, and Pérez finished outside the top four with the fastest lap, or the top three without it.[5]

Track changes[]

All drivers and teams took part in the race weekend. The first and the third activation point of the DRS were slightly moved further back, being positioned 48 metres (157 ft) after turn 5 and 43 metres (141 ft) after the apex of turn 23, respectively.[6] Furthermore, the circuit has been resurfaced in a number of areas, most significantly full-width sections the length of the pit straight to shortly after turn 1, from turn 5 to just before the braking point for turn 7, from turn 12 to 12, from the braking point for turn 14 to just after the corner, and from before turn 15 through to turn 10.
